Tree is dead, dying, up-rooting, split, contains excessive decay or has any other serious condition that would cause it to be unsafe.
Tree is causing a major sight restriction at a street corner; removal may be necessary when pruning is not adequate to correct the problem.
Tree has caused significant damage to private walls, driveways, walkways and decks.
To facilitate a public works improvement project when extensive roots will be cut. Such projects include sidewalk and curb & gutter replacement.
Disruption of sewer line; although tree roots do not enter sewer lines unless there is a pre-existing leak, the City may remove a tree to prevent continuous root invasion. Verification from plumber is required.
Specimen trees are exempt from many of the preceding tree removal criteria. These are trees characterized by either their age, rarity, exceptional stature, or having above-average value. Some examples of specimen trees are the Coast Live Oaks in the Red Hill area.
